Gateway to the Sunnmørsalpane

Sykkylven is perhaps the most beautiful of all Sunnmøre's landscapes. What creates this beauty is not one thing alone – neither the fjord, nor the mountains, nor the glaciers, nor the valley – but all of it together, a harmonious blend of the magnificent with the gentle.

Stories

Stories of us

There's much to tell about Sykkylven. The landscape and people reveal stories of today, yesterday and tomorrow. Discover what shapes Sykkylven into who we are.

  1. Snow-laden mountain range with glaciers, green forest, and red farmhouses nestled in the valley below

    The mountain realm

    welcome into the mountain realm

Sykkylven is a starting point for many mountain walks in the Sunnmørsalpane. The distinctive Straumshornet (976 m) comes into view already on the ferry from Ålesund. Råna (1586 m) is our highest peak. From Brunstad in Velledalen, a path leads to Slogen (1564 m) in Ørsta, also known as the 'Sunnmøre Queen'.

  2. Industrial facility beside a fjord with mountains rising behind, boats at the quay, dwellings on the right

    The furniture story

    Furniture capital and technology hub

Over a hundred furniture factories emerged in cellars and simple factory buildings before and after the Second World War, gradually becoming a vital industry in the agricultural community of Sykkylven. Craftsmanship and industrial production took off in 1929, and by the 1940s and 50s, there were well over 120 furniture businesses here. Today, Ekornes is the largest furniture manufacturer in the Nordic region, capable of producing 1,700 Stressless chairs in a single day with advanced automation. Take a journey through history at the Furniture Museum, or discover furniture art at Galleri Cylindra.

  3. Tranquil fjord with small boats, mountain huts scattered across the slopes, peaks in the distance

    Village gems

    Small villages, great experiences

In Hundeidvik you'll find a climbing park for the young and an indoor climbing wall. Or how about a dip in the heated open-air pool at Ikornnes? In Tusvika, you can see Peder Opsvik's art furniture, or try your fishing luck from the quay and visit the country shop in Ramstaddalen. In Velledalen, you can play disc golf beneath snow-capped peaks. Fjellsætra is a perfect base for fine mountain walks, summer and winter alike.

  4. Town centre street lined with shops and businesses, car park, mountains framing the view

    Sykkylven centre

    A welcoming high street

Sykkylven centre, Aure, has several specialist shops for clothes and fashion, sports retailers, building supplies, interior design, glassware and ceramics, a wine shop, pharmacy, hairdressers and more – all within walking distance, like an open-air shopping district. Perhaps a break in Kyrkjeparken, at a café or the library, might tempt you?

  5. Snow-laden mountain range with glaciers, green forest, and red farmhouses nestled in the valley below

    Fjellsætra

    Fjellsætra

A popular recreation area just 20 minutes' drive from Sykkylven and Stranda, with 700 cabins surrounding Nysætervatnet in the heart of the Sunnmørsalpane. Excellent hiking opportunities summer and winter, with Sunnmørsalpane Skiarena for alpine skiing, hiking and ski touring enthusiasts. A local shop in Velledalen is just under 10 minutes away.

Explore Sunnmøre

In the heart of Sunnmøre lies Sykkylven. Hundeidvik sits at the entrance to Hjørundfjorden, and from here you can take the ferry to Standal and onward to the roadless village of Trandal. We'd recommend a visit to the idyllic Christian Gaard heritage farm, which hosts blues, rock and country festivals each summer. From Sykkylven you can take day trips to Geiranger in Stranda, Trollstigen in Rauma, Tafjordfjella in Fjord, Runde in Herøy and the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund, among other destinations.
