Fishing

Sykkylven offers excellent fishing spots along the fjord, in salmon rivers and mountain lakes. Whether you're after an evening's quiet casting or a longer expedition into the high country, there's good water waiting.

Did you know that Northern Europe's shortest salmon river lies right here in Sykkylven? The stream at Straumgjerde stretches just a few hundred metres, yet it carries a fine reputation among salmon anglers.

Straumen flows from Fetvatnet into Sykkylvsfjorden and forms part of the Fetvassdraget system. Salmon here have been caught at weights up to 16.5 kg, though most fish run between 3–6 kg. The lower stretch is reserved for fly fishers. Velledalselva, also part of Fetvassdraget, suits single-handed fly rods nicely; worm and spinner fishing work well too. It's a rewarding river with plenty of smaller salmon and some respectable mid-sized fish.

Fetvatnet is a popular spot—you can fish from boat or bank for salmon and sea trout from 15 June to 31 July, though catches are regulated by permit and angler.

Aureelva has about 4 kilometres of productive salmon water. It's a typical spate river that fishes well in most pools after rain brings a good flow. A fly-only zone opens in the upper reaches during the second half of August.

In Sykkylvsfjorden and Storfjorden you can fish from boat or shore—plenty of productive marks dot the coastline. Many species run seasonally: cod, halibut, ling, tusk, haddock, mackerel, pollock, coalfish and flounder all take the hook if luck is with you. Crab fishing is year-round; lobster may be taken only with approved creels between 1 October and 31 December.
